Wilma Elizabeth (Askew) Tabbut was born June 25, 1918, in Alberta, Canada to Turner and Margaret Darlene Askew. Her father’s family had settled there after immigrating from England. They later moved to Minnesota and Wilma attended high school in Casselton, ND and Borup, MN. She earned her teaching credentials from Moorhead Teacher’s College in Moorhead, MN. She taught school in Sunburg, MN, White Earth Indian Reservation, and San Diego, CA in the early 1940’s.
Wilma was united in marriage to Quintin Tabbut in 1943 at San Diego, California. Quintin was serving in the United States Navy at the time. After returning home from the Service, they farmed near Barnesville, Minnesota for eight years. In 1953 they moved to Aurdal Township near Fergus Falls where they farmed and made their home. Wilma was a devoted wife for 52 years and loving mother to seven children. She enjoyed each of her 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Wilma was a member of Federated Church in Fergus Falls where she served on the board of Deacons and Elders, sang in the choir and sewed with the quilters group. She was also active as a 4-H leader for many years. Wilma was a co-owner of Midwest Fashions ladies ready-to-wear store in Fergus Falls from 1976 to 1986. She moved her residence to Fergus Falls in 2008.
On Friday, March 6, 2015, Wilma passed away at the PioneerCare Center in Fergus Falls at the age of 96.
Wilma is survived by four daughters, Marilyn Fairchild of Rapid City, South Dakota; Elaine Klicker of Oracle, Arizona; Joyce Resler of Bloomfield, Indiana; Liane Kirmis of Bellevue, Nebraska; three sons, Wayne Tabbut and Vernon Tabbut of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; and the Reverend Mark Tabbut of Chicago, Illinois; 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, husband Quintin Tabbut, sister Mary Edith Berg, and granddaughter, Erin Tabbut.
