William Gene “Bill” Nehk, 88, of Fergus Falls, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 6, 2022 after battling Alzheimer’s for many years.
Bill was born to William and Ruth (Bappe) Nehk on November 4, 1934 in Friberg Township. Bill was just two years old when his father bought the farm in Aurdal Township where he continued to live for his entire life.
On August 7, 1954, he married Donna Bauman at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls and together they had seven children. Bill was a hard worker and worked at many different jobs in order to provide for his family. Some of those jobs included road and building construction, driving truck, a stint at M & R Sign Company and he also farmed, which he loved. He excelled at wood working and built several items of furniture, including identical dressers for all 17 grandchildren. He also built cabinets and did all the wood flooring and trim throughout his home.
In 1968, Bill and Donna joined the Worldwide Church of God in Fargo, ND and faithfully made the 120-mile round trip every Sabbath until Bill was no longer able to travel. Going to the yearly church conventions was the highlight of the year for the entire family. Bill converted two old school buses into “fancy” RVs, which made the trips even more fun.
Bill enjoyed playing games and providing fun outdoor activities for his kids, including playing “crack the whip” on the frozen lake, pulling all the kids with a little tractor. Growing up an only child, Bill thoroughly enjoyed family and always had a Boston Terrier to pal around with. He also had a great love for country music and spent hours listening to the “old greats” while playing along with his steel guitar or accordion.
Bill and Donna attempted moving away a couple of times, but his heart always called him home to the farm. And it is here he will find his final resting place when family and friends gather for a simple memorial service planned for a later date.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Donald and grandson, Kerry.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Donna; children, Kirby, Michael, Sherry (Lynn) Hebert, Kevin (Sandy), Joseph, Jerry, Donny; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
