Warren James Umaluf, 75, a resident of rural Fergus Falls died, Saturday, November 12, 2011, at his home. Warren was born on June 9, 1936 in Fergus Falls, the son of Erwin and Irene (Block) Umlauf. He attended District School #221 in Carlisle Township and graduated from Rothsay High School in 1954. After high school he entered the National Guard and then the United States Army, serving 18 months in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1961 On December 14, 1958 he married Donna Mae Vandermeer in Fergus Falls. In his younger years he worked as a hired man on area farms. Upon returning from the service he worked for Larry Ott trucking and in 1972 bought his own Kenworth truck and began hauling hogs. In 1975 he purchased the family farm and raised beef cattle for 7 years. He then drove truck for Ben Frazier and Mark Sand and Gravel until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Elks Club. He enjoyed deer hunting, snowmobiling, ice fishing, watching NASCAR, woodworking, fabricating and die cast tractor collecting. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his huge family of friends at the Viking Cafe. Preceding him in death was his father Erwin; father and mother-in-law, Ted and Emma Vandermeer, 2 sisters-in-law, Carolyn Friedrich and Janelle Umlauf. Survivors include his wife, Donna of Fergus Falls; son, Bryan (Tina) Umlauf of Fergus Falls; mother, Irene of Fergus Falls; siblings, Orlin Umlauf of Brooklyn Park, Roger Umlauf of Fergus Falls, Betty (Darvin) Rocholl of Erhard, David (Gwen) Umlauf of Moorhead. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and faithful dog, Smokey. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday with a 6:30 p.m. public prayer service at the funeral home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls.
