Walter Cichy

June 16, 1928 — August 23, 2012

Walter Cichy, 84, of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Lake Region Healthcare. He was born June 16, 1928 in Urbank, MN, the son of Clemens and Minnie (Stich) Cichy.  He attended school in Fergus Falls, graduating in 1947. Walter served in the United States Army in the Korean War from January 1951 until October of 1952.  Because of his bravery during his service he received a Purple Heart.  In May of 1955, he began his employment with Otter Tail Power Company in Fergus Falls and remained there until his retirement on July 1, 1990. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, and helped prepare the fish for the Lenten fish fries for 15 years.  During his younger years, he played third base with the Dalton Baseball Town Team and was a great hitter.  Walt enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseshoes, golfing, trading cars and bowling in the Farmers League in the winter.  He had a great sense of humor and was very witty with the one liners.  He always had a dog as his companion. Walt moved into Mill Street Residence in September of 2011.  In no time at all, he settled into his new home.  The Mill Street staff gave him so much encouragement and support, he felt he gained a lot of new extended family.  Thank you for making Walts past year so meaningful and enjoyable. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Clarence Bud Cichy and Edward Stan Cichy. Survivors include a niece, Diane (Ron) Scott of Fergus Falls; his sisters, Evie Anderson of San Dimas, CA and Doris Scott of Shawnee, KS; sisters-in-law, Delphine Spranger of Fergus Falls and Doris Cichy of Shakopee along with several nieces and nephews.
