Virgil P. Schlueter was born in the Hutchinson Hospital on August 18, 1927 to Arther and Lena Schlueter and died at the Glenwood Nursing Home on November 21, 2023 at the age of 96.
His early childhood years were spent on a farm near Hutchinson. The family unfortunately lost the farm in the Great Depression, so they moved to rural Frazee, MN where they bought an abandoned farm and began basically a subsistence lifestyle; living off what the farm produced and supplementing with hunting, fishing, and gathering.
Understanding that his future was limited, Virgil decided to leave the farm and joined the United States Air Force, where his duty was in the Signal Corps. He spent time in San Antonio, Illinois, Montana, and was stationed long-term in Alaska.
Virgil met Luella, his future wife, at a local barn dance. They discovered that she was living only about four miles from where he lived, but their paths never crossed as they went to different churches and schools. They were married December 28, 1946 before leaving for his assignment in Alaska. After the service he worked various jobs before moving to Wahpeton, ND where he attended Wahpeton Science, graduating with an Associate Degree in Accounting.
Work brought him to Fergus Falls where he worked in accounting at Hanson and Neumann, working there for 27 years and then six years with the Underwood School District. They raised their four children in Fergus Falls, attending Zion Lutheran Church. Virgil continued to enjoy hunting and fishing and spent much enjoyable time at their small cabin on Ten Mile Lake.
Luella also died on a November 21, but in 2021. Virgil suffered increasing health problems and dealt with macular degeneration, necessitating him to living in long-term care his last two years.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Luella; parents, Arther and Lena (Nimitz); daughter, Pamela (Jon) Erickson, and sisters, Vi (Elmer) Lambert and Myrtle (Elmer) Edquist.
Virgil is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Mary Beth) Schlueter, Orenda (Rod) Kavanaugh, and Brian (Susan) Schlueter, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
