Velta Zunde, 88, of rural Underwood, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at her home under the care of her family and Lakeland Hospice. She was born September 29, 1923, in Latvia, the daughter of Ernst and Olga (Laipnis) Roze. She attended school where she developed a love for reading, and became proficient in the art of fabric weaving. On March 1, 1944, she married Edgar Zunde in Latvia. After living in refugee camps in Germany, Velta, Edgar, Zinta, and Gunta came to the United States in 1949 as refugees. There they settled in Greenville, Ohio with the help of Lutheran World Relief and Mr. Petersime. Velta worked in a knitting factory while Edgar was a tailor in a men’s clothing store. In 1961 the family relocated to Minneapolis where a large number of Latvians lived. Velta worked at Tension Envelope factory while Edgar opened his own tailor shop. Edgar died from cancer in 1985, and in 1986 Velta retired and moved to Fergus Falls to live with Zinta and her family. Velta was the stability of unconditional love and encouragement to her family. Although she wasn’t active in church participation, she had a solid faith. She worshipped through services on TV, read her bible, and prayed. Velta enjoyed flowers, fine crocheting, reading, and most especially, her family. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Edgar, in 1985, her daughter, Gunta in 2009, and a grandson, David, in 1979.
