Truman Eggum

Truman Eggum age 68, of Dalton, Minnesota, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday afternoon, August 15, 2008 at the MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Truman Charles Eggum was born on July 3, 1940 in St. Olaf Township near Dalton, MN the son of Milo and Gladys (Gullickson) Eggum. As a child he attended School District #19 in St. Olaf Township as well as the Dalton School. From 1954-1956 Truman attended the Morris Ag. School. He spent his Junior and Senior years at Underwood High School where he graduated in 1958. In 1960 Truman joined the US National Guard and was stationed in Fort Leonardwood, New Jersey. On February 25, 1961 he married Carolyn Johnson at Zion Lutheran Church in Dalton. They lived in Minneapolis for a short time while Truman worked construction. In 1961 they returned to the Dalton area and started farming.  In 1973 Truman purchased the Eggum family farm in St. Olaf Township. He continued to farm until his retirement in 2006.  Truman enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Throughout the years he looked forward to time spent with his family at the hunting shack on Johnson Lake and winters in Mesquite, Nevada. Truman took great pride in his grandchildren, who were the joy of his life.  Truman had a passion for farming which was evident in the way he cared for his crops. He especially enjoyed combining at harvest time. In 1997, Truman was recognized as “Outstanding Conservation Farmer” in West Otter Tail County. Truman was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Marvel. Survivors include his wife Carolyn; two children, Theresa (Mac) Ketterling of Billings, Montana, and Tracy (Daniel) Hanson of Ashby; Donald (Debby) Rocholl (who has been like a son to Truman), also from Ashby; a brother Oscar (Beatrice) Matson, Jr. of Mount Dora, Florida; three sisters, Gwen (Jack) Langlie of Ashby, Holly (Tom) Hiedeman of Underwood, and Pauline (Steve) Torgrimson of Ashby; a sister-in-law, Joani Eggum of Burnsville; seven grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation: Monday, August 18, 2008 from 5-7 p.m. with a public prayer service at 7p.m. at the Olson Funeral Home, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
