Tracy L. Thompson, 96, a resident of Fergus Falls, formerly of Elbow Lake, died Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Broen Memorial Home.
He was born on February 28, 1917 in Whitetail, Montana, the only child of George and Ragnild (Uthuse) Thompson. At the age of three, his mother died as the result of an accident and a year later, his father was killed working on the railroad. Upon his parent’s death, his grandparents adopted and raised him in Elbow Lake. Due to his grandmother’s health conditions, Tracy was cared for by numerous relatives during his childhood. His grandmother died when he was 14 years old, at which time a neighbor family took him in. At the age of 18, to survive the depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked in Ely, MN. Later, he returned to Elbow Lake and worked as a farmhand.
On September 9, 1938 he married Eunice Martinson in Sisseton, SD. The couple resided in Elbow Lake where he worked for Don Wahl at the Creamery as a butter maker. He eventually became the custodian at the Elbow Lake school, where he worked for 32 years, retiring at the age of 65.
His passion was being a hobby beekeeper and he enjoyed making and selling honey. He enjoyed fishing and swimming at their cabin, travelling, including a trip to Norway and in his later years, he found a hobby in weaving rag rugs.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents and parents.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Eunice of Fergus Falls; son, Everett (Bridget) Thompson of Riverside, CA; grandchildren, Amy Thompson, Kathleen (Glen) Freuden, Sarah (Robb) Whitecotton; great-grandchildren, Carsten and Marin Kerr; sister-in-law, Janet Martinson of Anoka; nieces, Michelle (Ross) Stageberg and Denise (Scott) Kossan; also surviving are numerous cousins and other extended family.
