Thelma Flatin

February 19, 1918 — November 13, 2012

Thelma Josephine Flatin, 94, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

She was born February 19, 1918, to Haldor and Martha (Moe) Hanson in Wilkin County, Minnesota, and was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Church in Rothsay, Minnesota. She sang in the choir and also taught Sunday School. She attended school in Rothsay.

Thelma met Arnold at a May basket social at a school south of Rothsay. He bought her beautiful grape basket full of goodies for two. They went together for a while and were married on September 30, 1940. They made their home on the farm in Oscar Township for thirty years.

Thelma and Arnold were active at the Senior Citizens Center in Rothsay and Sons of Norway in Fergus Falls. She was a member of New Life Lutheran Church in Rothsay where she was active in ladies aid and circle. When Arnold’s health was failing, they moved to Fergus Falls. Arnold passed away on July 7, 1997, and Thelma moved to the Page House in Fergus Falls. She moved to the Broen Home in Fergus Falls in November of 2007.

Thelma enjoyed her flowers and vegetable garden. She was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain. No one left their home without having coffee and a delicious meal. She and Arnold spent many winters in the South, which they enjoyed. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and music. She cherished her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in addition to all her many friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Arnold, one brother, Calmer Hanson, brother-in-law Ervin Noyes, and sister-in-law, Joyce Hanson.

Survivors include a son, Gary (Verna) Flatin of Rothsay; daughter, Donna (Daryl) Hauger of West Des Moines, IA; four grandchildren: Todd Flatin of St. Cloud, MN, Darren (Julie) Flatin of Fargo, ND, Cheri (Derek) Folden of West Des Moines, IA, and Brian (Kari) Hauger of Minneapolis, MN; three great-grandchildren: Jeffery Flatin and twins William and Claire Folden; one sister, Gina Noyes of Fergus Falls; one brother, Uldrick Hanson of Knoxville, TN; a sister-in-law, Jeroma Hanson of Fergus Falls; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
