Sylvia Hoffer

Sylvia Geraldine Hoffer, 81, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, Minnesota.

She was born November 9, 1931, in Streeter, North Dakota, the daughter of August and Lydia (Meich) Schock. She attended school in Streeter, graduating in 1949. She was the manager of the Streeter Café from 1946 – 1947, and also worked as a fry cook at the Streeter Hotel and Café.

On November 30, 1948 she married Bennie L. Hoffer in Streeter. They lived on the family farm for the first 30 years of their marriage. Sylvia worked as the head cook at the Streeter Public School from 1978 – 1982. Bennie passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 1982.

After leaving the farm she lived in Jamestown for a short period of time. In 1983 Sylvia moved to her lake home on Long Lake near Fergus Falls, where she enjoyed spending time outdoors. She was employed part-time as a baker at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, MN from 1984 until retiring in 1990. Sylvia also helped babysit her grandchildren, which she truly enjoyed. She later moved into the Page House in Fergus Falls, and in June of 2011 made her home at St. Francis Health Care Campus in Breckenridge.

She was a charter member of the Streeter American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls where she participated in W.M.S.

Sylvia loved being outside, where she enjoyed working in the yard. She also enjoyed reading, cooking and baking. She was well known for her homemade buns and rolls.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Charles Schock in 1957; her husband, Bennie; and a grandson (son of Kenneth Hoffer).

Survivors include her children: Steven (Judy) Hoffer of Bismarck ND, Kenneth (Lana) Hoffer of Streeter ND, Terry Morris of St. Cloud FL, Michael Hoffer of Fargo ND, and Lori (Jeff) Kubitz of Wolverton MN; eight grandchildren: Jerrad Hoffer, Michelle Paulson, Erin Kubitz, Chris Kubitz, Andrea Kubitz, Michel Hoffer, Melissa Lepp, and Joshua Hoffer; eight great-grandchildren, Brycen and Brynlee Hoffer, Tristan, Liam and Ayidan Lepp, Cheyden Paulson, and Emma and Owen Cook; a brother, Ronald Schock; a sister, Carol Barnick; and step-brothers Colin and Steve Magee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Visitation: One hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home
Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls
Clergy: Reverend Ed Monson
Interment: Will be at a later date in Streeter, North Dakota
