Steven Schachtschneider

Steven Douglas Schachtschneider, 56, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis from complications of cancer. He was born November 13, 1950, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the son of Melvin and Arlene (Moe) Schachtschneider. He graduated from Underwood High School, and then attended what is now known as MN State Community and Technical College in Fergus Falls, and one year at Alexandria Technical College, where he completed his degree in Law Enforcement. He was a deputy sheriff for Otter Tail County for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army, spending one and a half years in Vietnam, where he received several medals, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, and the National Defense Service Medal. Steve married Pam (Christenson) Niemi on July 8, 1972, and they had two children, Chad and Jana. He married Carol (Schwantz) Schachtschneider on June 22, 1985, and they had two sons, Seth and Shane. Steve loved baseball and was the pitcher for his high school team and the VFW and Legion baseball teams. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. He was a member of the Fergus Falls Disabled American Veterans Post 25. Survivors include his parents, Melvin and Arlene Schachtschneider, of Underwood; his children: Chad (girlfriend Melissa) Schachtschneider of St. Cloud, Jana, Seth, and Shane Schachtschneider, all of Fergus Falls; a sister, Susan (Ken) Saurer of Clitherall; a brother, Barry (Laurie) Schachtschneider of Minot, North Dakota; several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
