Stanley Olson

Stanley “Stan” Olson, 86, a resident of Fergus Falls, died, Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. Stanley was born on July 13, 1923 in Milton, N.D., the son of Carl and Hulda (Christopherson) Olson. He went to school in Osnabrock and Fargo, N.D. Stan served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a radio man on the U.S.S. Badoing Straits, which was a new baby flat top aircraft carrier, on the way to Pearl Harbor to load planes, when the war ended.  Stan married Avis K. Rasmusson on June 20, 1947 in Osnabrock, N.D. The couple moved to Chicago, where they were both employed and eventually they moved to Fergus Falls, where Stan worked as a salesman for International Harvesters Co. During those years, Stan and Avis also raised three children.  Stan was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the American Legion and enjoyed his time with the McDonald’s coffee club. His hobby was being an amateur ham radio operator. Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant sister. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Avis of Fergus Falls; children, Rebecca (Jim) Shaver of Victoria, British Columbia, Barbara (Greg) Ecker of Fergus Falls, and Jim and (Jeanie) Olson of Bismarck; four grandchildren, Jay (Nicole) Shaver, Julie Shaver, Eric (Libby) Ecker, and Stephanie (Jake) Francis and three great grandchildren, Dane Shaver, Ella Ecker and Eli Ecker. Also surviving is one sister, Ila Dearey ,and one brother, Roger (Carol) Olson. Stan will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Visitation:    5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Olson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.    Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls. Clergy:  Reverend Paul Nelson Burial:  Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, N. D. at a later date. Military Participation: Fergus Falls American Legion #30 and V. F. W. Post 612
