Shirley Anderson Hyslop

Shirley Arlyne Hyslop, age 87, died Friday, September 30, 2016, at the Pioneer Cottages in Fergus Falls.

Shirley was born on December 17, 1928, in Warren, Minnesota, the daughter of Marie (Folden) and Roy Swanson. She attended schools in Warren and graduated from Warren High School in 1946. Shirley then attended Northwestern School of Nursing in Minneapolis and received her RN license.

On August 19, 1951, she married Byron Anderson at First Lutheran Church in Warren. They lived and worked in Minneapolis, Willmar and Clarinda, Iowa before settling in Fergus Falls in 1955 to raise their family. Shirley worked for Lake Region Hospital and the Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center and retired from the RTC in the late 1990s.

Shirley and Byron traveled the world visiting sites in Africa, Europe and Asia. They traveled until the year before Byron’s death. They continued their habit of playing bridge with a close group of friends. Another favorite activity was volunteering to deliver meals to shut ins and working as respite caregivers for hospice. Shirley loved knitting, reading, crosswords and cooking. Her buttermilk waffles are a favorite memory for many.

Following Byron’s death in 2004, Shirley married Charles Hyslop in 2007. They spent their years together by traveling and enjoying time at Chuck’s Swan Lake cabin. Chuck died in 2013.

Preceding her in death were her brother, Roy Swanson; an infant grandson, Adam Millard; a niece, Tammy Swanson; and a nephew, Tim Swanson.

She is survived by her children, Craig (Donna Hegvik-) Anderson of Pueblo, CO, Peggy (Ben) Underwood of Fergus Falls, Julie (Bill) Millard of Fergus Falls and Roy (Ellen) Anderson of Fergus Falls; grandchildren, Kelsey (Kate) Anderson of Denver, Byron (Louise) Anderson of Denver, Jillian (fiancé, Stephan Kansman) Anderson of Denver, Jack (fiancé, Nicky Berman) Underwood of New York City, Wade Underwood of Minneapolis, Liz Underwood of Minneapolis, Melissa (Jason) Degidio of St. Paul, Andrew (Emily) Millard of Fergus Falls, Joey (Gabby) Millard of Minneapolis, Eric Anderson of Hutchinson, Jake Anderson of Minneapolis, and Brady Anderson of Minneapolis; great-grandchildren, Evie and Signe Millard, Bennett Degidio and Bailey Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Deanna Swanson of Warren.

Shirley will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
