Selma Johnson

Selma May Johnson, 103, died Friday, January 4, 2008, at the Pioneer Retirement Community, Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where she had lived for a short time after fracturing her hip. She was born May 4, 1904, in Meadows Township, Wilkin County, near Rothsay, the eldest daughter of Conrad and Bertha (Meyer) Wasmuth. She attended elementary and high school in Fergus Falls. On August 31, 1924, she married Arnold E. Johnson at her parent's home in Fergus Falls. She was employed at the Fergus Falls State Hospital for 43 years, as a switchboard operator for seven years and was the chief clerk for 36 years, retiring on June 30, 1964. The couple wintered in Arizona for 12 years and spent a great deal of time traveling the United States. She was involved in tour arrangements for the AARP in Fergus Falls. Selma was a lifetime member of Church of Peace United Methodist (formerly Evangelical Church) where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the church choir. Other interests of hers were sewing, knitting and other crafts, as well as music, which was an important part of her life. She spent many hours playing piano duets with her sister, Alice. For the last seven years, she had lived at the Mill Street Residence, Fergus Falls. Preceding her in death were her husband, Arnold; a son, Larry Errol and her sister, Alice Wasmuth. Survivors include her son, Arnold C. (Bonnaveve) of Montevideo; two grandchildren, Paul (Amie) Johnson and Kristi Johnson of Elkhorn, Wisconsin and two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Kara. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2008, at the Mill Street Residence in Fergus Falls with Reverend Terry Tilton officiating. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fergus Falls. Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls provided assistance. Condolences may be sent online at www.olsonfuneralhome.com
