Selma Christine Fick, age 92, a resident of rural Elizabeth, died Monday, November 30, 2009, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was born February 4, 1917, on the family farm near Carlisle, Minnesota, the daughter of Knute and Clara (Torgusson) Skogen. She grew up on the farm, attending school in the area. Selma was baptized and confirmed at Hedemarken Lutheran Church, rural Carlisle. She worked for the Margaret Johnson family in Fergus Falls. On April 9, 1942, she married Fred Fick at the Hedemarken Church parsonage. The couple farmed on the Fick family farm in Fergus Falls Township. In 1989 she moved to Fergus Falls to make a new home. She enjoyed living there until July of 2004 when she became a resident of Country Breeze in rural Elizabeth. As a young woman, Selma and her two sisters would sing and play guitar, and would sing on the radio. Selma loved to cook and bake, loved indoor gardening, especially growing African violets, and outdoor gardening. She also enjoyed sewing, dancing and old time music. Selma was a gracious hostess, and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. While living in Fergus Falls she did volunteer work at the Fergus Falls Historical Society, as well as the Senior Citizen Center. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Fred, in 1987; and her siblings: Reuben Skogen, Mabel Hagen, Kenneth Skogen, ClaraBelle “Mae” Skogen, and Ella Tomhave. Survivors include four children: Marlene Wilde (special friend Harlan Ernst) of Fergus Falls, Elaine Fick of Fargo, ND, Ron (Connie) Fick of Annandale, and Michael (Joni) Fick of Big Lake, MN; nine grandchildren: Renee (Kerry) Lemke, Kristi (Don) Parrish, Jeff (Stacy) Wilde, Troy (Christy) Thoennes, Aimee (David) Berg, Rebecca Schumacher, David Schumacher, Jr., Angel Schumacher, and Zachary Schumacher; ; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Edith Skogen of Fergus Falls, Alice Fick of Fergus Falls, and Ethel Goerdt of Detroit Lakes; numerous nieces and nephews; and her companion dog, Wally. Selma's family would like to say a special thank you to Russ and Mary Soland and family for providing a loving and caring home for their mother these last few years.
