Scott A. Norman, 57, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Lake Region Healthcare surrounded by his loving family after a 1 year battle with cancer
Scott was born in Fergus Falls on July 4, 1956 to Donald and Valera (Todahl) Norman on his brother, Craig’s 3rd birthday. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace United Methodist Church in Fergus Falls. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1974. He lived in Seattle, WA for a short time after taking a trip there with friends and deciding he really liked being there. He returned to Fergus Falls and remained in his hometown the remainder of his life. He worked for Dahl Music Company for a number of years before becoming employed by the City of Fergus Falls as a boiler operator at the garbage incinerator for 20 years. He earned his Chief Engineer License while employed there. When the incinerator shut down, Scott went to work for Ottertail Ag Ethanol which was later taken over by Green Plains Renewable Energy. He was employed by GPRE as the Lead Boiler/Dryer Operator until the time of his death. He also had a drain cleaning business along with his brother-in-law, Craig and for a couple of years, had a picture framing shop set up in his basement. He framed prints and photos for family and friends with a high standard for perfection.
He met the love of his life, Linda Lee, in 1980 and after their 1st date, told a co-worker the next day that he had found the girl he was going to marry: they were married on May 7, 1983 at Zion Lutheran Church. Scott and Linda have 2 sons. In May of 1986, their first son, Joe entered their lives and in May of 1989, Sam was born to complete this loving family of four. He loved his boys so very much and was incredibly proud of the great young men they have become. For years, winters were spent watching Joe and Sam play hockey, summers were a time to watch them play baseball. All through the years, Scott enjoyed the many activities the boys were involved in.
As a boy, Scott was involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Webelos. At 10 years old, he and two friends, Tim Formo and Danny Johnson formed a band and they called themselves the “Gremlins”. They played banquets, school functions, Balmoral and won 1st place at the Fergus Falls Talent Show. They also took the honors of the most crowd pleasing band at the Fargo “Battle of the Bands”. These boys played together as “Gremlins” until they were 14 years old at which time their interest in hunting and fishing took over.
Scott loved to hunt, fish and camp; summer weekends were spent at Elks Point during Joe and Sam’s childhood. Good times and bonfires were enjoyed for many years with family and friends at the Point. In recent years, summer vacation time was spent at Eagle Lake, one of Scott’s favorite places to be other than home. That home was a home he built in 1988 with the help of his brother Busch and friend Don (Doobie) Dean. He could build or fix most anything and was always up for the challenge of a new project. He also loved playing cribbage, feeding a wide variety of birds in his backyard, taking good care of his home and yard and especially taking off on his Harley whenever he had the opportunity. He was an avid Twins fan and rarely missed watching a game. For 10 years, he and Linda were involved in the planning and organizing of the PPP Motorcycle Run with friends which they held to raise money for people in need. When the idea of having a benefit for him was taking place, it was hard for Scott to accept....he was used to being the one to raise money for others, not being the one that help was being given to. Last spring, Scott decided that honeybees was something he wanted to try and had so much fun tending to them and processing the wonderful honey they produced. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his family and his many friends.
Preceding him in death were his father, his father-in-law, Donald Lee; mother-in-law, Norma Lee; grandparents; uncles and aunt; Lloyd and Eleanor Todahl, Roger Todahl, Ronnie Norman and his cousin, Jeff Todahl.
Survivors include his loving wife, Linda of Fergus Falls; precious sons, Joe (Alyssa Eggum) and Sam of Fergus Falls; mother, Val Norman of Fergus Falls; brothers, Craig “Busch” (Renee) Norman of Fergus Falls, Zac (Deb Deopere) Norman of Hutchinson; sister, Beth (Greg) Zeipelt of Lake Elmo; nieces, Maggie (Ryan) Honer, Lydia Zeipelt; nephews, Monte (Kalie Anderson) Norman, Hunter Norman; great-nephew, Jake Honer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Steven Lee and family of Wahpeton, Susan and Mark Hermes and family of Fergus Falls, Dawn and Brad Laager and family of Little Falls, Denise and Jerry Gerhardson and family of Fergus Falls, Craig and Margaret Lee of Battle Lake; uncle and aunts; Dilly Todahl, Richie and Delilah Norman, Marion Norman, Kelly Norman, numerous cousins and many dear friends.
