Robert S. Johnson, 98, died Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center in Battle Lake.
He was born on May 20, 1916 in Amor Township to Alfred and Celia (Bjorgo) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Robert attended country school in Amor where he started the school wood fired furnace every day for school.
On April 3, 1942, Robert was drafted into the United States Army. He quickly moved up in rank as Staff Sargent, serving in the WWII Normandy Invasion in D-Day. He was proud to be a WWII Veteran.
Robert met his future wife, Selyvia Somers, at the Glendalough Game Farm. They were united in marriage on June 1, 1943 and to this union, four sons were born, Robert D., Arden, Randy and Terry.
Robert worked on the family farm for several years, the West Central Turkey Plant, and was township supervisor and assessor. He also volunteered during his spare time at the Ottertail Nursing Home.
He enjoyed playing cards, pitching softball, and dancing. But most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Alfred and Celia; wife, Selyvia; brothers, Vernon and Lyman Johnson; sister, Ruby (True).
Robert is survived by his sister, Dorothy (Douglas) Buhl and his sons, Robert (Bev) of Princeton, Arden of Kansas City, Randy of Battle Lake and Terry (Kim) Johnson of Paynesville. Also surviving are grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
