Richard “Dick” R. Nickel, 87, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, December 9, 2019, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
Richard Roland Nickel was born October 22, 1932, in Wahpeton, ND to Herbert and Leona (Steffens) Nickel. At the age of seven, he and his family moved to Fergus Falls. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School 1951. After graduating he enlisted in the Navy and traveled the world on several Air Craft Carriers, including the USS Hornet and USS Corregidor. In 1955, he attended electronics school in Minneapolis.
On October 6, 1956, he married Clara Britton in Waite Park, MN. In 1957, the couple moved to Arcadia, CA after he graduated from electronics school. Dick was employed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA until 1973. The couple returned to Minnesota and built their home on Long Lake, north of Fergus Falls. After returning to Fergus Falls, he started his own fire alarm business, Detect Alarm. The couple sold their home on Long Lake and moved into Fergus Falls in 2012.
Dick is survived by his wife, Clara; son, Richard “Rick” (Lisa) Nickel; daughter, Sandra (Tim) Lien; grandson, Riley Knodle, and three nieces, Lori Buseth, Joni Fick, and Debbie Peasley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna Andstrom, and niece, Kathy Toso.
Visitation: One-hour prior to the service at the Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls.
Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2019, at the Olson Funeral Home.
