Oscar Alexander Rude, 99, a lifelong resident of Dalton, and most recently a resident of the Broen Memorial Home, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He was born April 29, 1909, in Columbus, North Dakota, the son of Hans A. and Tillie (Brenden) Rude. At the age of five the family moved to Fergus Falls, moving to Dalton in 1914. He attended school in Dalton. He began working for his father in the blacksmith, service station, and electrical generation business. In 1955 he began his employment as a mechanic for the Ashby Co-op, retiring in 1972. In addition, he established the Dalton Econo-Wash Laundry. On October 22, 1932, he married Magna A. Spitsberg on the Spitsberg farm in Dane Prairie Township, rural Dalton. She died June 3, 1988. Oscar loved mechanic work, helping out numerous farmers around the Dalton area. In his youth he sang in the Orpheum Male Chorus, played baseball, and was a ski jumper. He also loved to build race cars and restore equipment, play horseshoes and dance. One of the highlights of his life was deer hunting in northern Minnesota every fall. He was a member of the Lake Region Pioneer Threshermen’s Organization, and Our Saviors-Ten Mile Lake Lutheran Church. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Magna; two daughters, Marlys Lien and Patricia Erickson; and brothers: Alvin, Calmer, Herbert, Goodwin, LeRoy and Ralph Rude and Justin in infancy. Survivors include two sons, James (Ilene) Rude of Richville, and Marwood (Marion) Rude of Otsego; ten grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Helen Adams of Dalton, and Arlene (Cliff) Wiesser of Battle Lake; a brother, Robert (Verna) Rude of Dalton; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Rude and Sally Spitsberg, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Friday with a 3:30 p.m. prayer service at the Light & Life Auditorium of the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
