Norman L. Long, 84, resident of Fergus Falls, formerly of Heilberger Lake, passed away at his home on Monday, February 16, 2015.
He was born in Fergus Falls on October 21, 1930, the son of Erwin Long and Emma (Peterson) Long.
He attended school in Fergus Falls, and worked for North Star Dairy driving a truck. Later in life he drove for Raymond Motors Transportation Company in Mauston, Wisconsin. Their house in Mauston was wonderful for the children with woods, a river, bluffs, caves, gocarts, a pony, and lots of buildings for them to play in. He retired to Heilberger Lake, in Otter Tail County, in 1978, which he called God’s Country.
He loved the lake, as well as fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed watching all the beautiful birds and animals at the lake, and collecting antique toy cars and trucks.
On January 29, 1949 he was united in marriage to Shirley A. Leeman.
Norman is survived by his wife Shirley of Fergus Falls; six children, Debra DeCoux of Austin, Texas, Mary Long (Phil) Geil of Austin, Texas, Dr. Lyle Long of State College, PA, Tim (GeorgAnn Patterson) Long of Columbus, Ohio, Cynthia (Kenneth) Mutchler of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Thomas (Amy Hall) Long of Boalsburg, PA. The six grown children, along with his grandchildren, loved visiting the 'bit of paradise' they had! It was a place to gather and enjoy family and nature, in addition to all the lake fun: picnicking, boating, swimming, water skiing and rides on the pontoon. He took great pride in his home and everyone could tell upon visiting. The lakeside deck was a constant joy for them to sit and enjoy nature during the warmer months. Also surviving is one brother, Ervin Long of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He also has 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Janelle (first grandchild, born on his birthday), Jeff, Jeana; Chelsea, Jaime; Dave, Rob; Joe, Alex, Wesley, Tim; Nicole and Mercedes; great grandchildren, Megan, Grant, Ethan, London, Taylor, Reilly, Zoe, Peyton and baby Shiloh.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, Robert Long and Donald Long; and his sisters, Dorothy Mortensen and Lorraine Shol.
