Norma Halbakken
Norma Halbakken, 89, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, August 30, 2007, at the Pioneer Retirement Community.
She was born on June 8, 1918, in Pelican Rapids, the daughter of Abel and Hannah (Johanson) Anderson. She grew up on a farm northwest of Pelican Rapids, was baptized and confirmed at the Pelican Valley Lutheran Church and attended rural school.
On January 9, 1938, she married Lloyd Halbakken at the Pelican Valley Lutheran Church. Norma commuted to the Fargo Moorhead area for a few years working as a housekeeper. They moved from the farm near Rothsay to Fergus Falls in 1966. She then resumed housekeeping in private homes and for the Holiday Inn, retiring in the early 1990s.
She was a former member of the Hamar Lutheran Church in Rothsay, enjoyed belonging to a homemakers club, volunteered at the Lake Region Hospital and was a current member of the First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.
Norma will be remembered for her handiwork, sewing, quilting and her good sense of wit. She enjoyed her family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren. She was a kind and gentle lady and will be missed by all who knew her.
Preceding her in death were her husband; a brother, Richard Anderson; a sister Irene Christianson; two grandsons, Timothy Solum and Rodney Bilden and one great-granddaughter, Melanie Kirkvold.
Survivors include four daughters, Beverly (Paul) Solum and Patricia (Allan) Hoff all of Fergus Falls, Shirley Bilden of Oakdale and Cynthia (Howard) Farr of Brooklyn Center; a son, Donovan (Patti) Halbakken of Cottage Grove; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Halbakken of Detroit Lakes and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church
Service: Wednesday at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls
Burial: Hamar Cemetery, Rothsay
