Nellie Fischer, 96, formerly of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, June 20, 2015, surrounded by her family, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
Nellie was born on August 30, 1918, to Anton and Bessie (Hanson) Ekeren in Lisbon, ND. She graduated from Lisbon High School and received her teaching certificate from Moorhead Normal School.
She taught in Hawley, before returning to earn her Bachelor’s degree from State Teachers College in Moorhead. She then taught in the Fargo School District. Nellie married Fred Fischer on June 1, 1948, in Fargo. They resided in Jamestown, ND and Fergus Falls where they raised three daughters. Nellie received her graduate certificate from the University of Minnesota and was employed by the Fergus Falls school district as a special education teacher until her retirement.
She was an active member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, an AAUW member, an avid bridge player, and a wonderful homemaker and seamstress.
Nellie is survived by her three daughters, Pat Skrove of Burnsville, MN, Nancy (Mike) Satrom of Galesburg, ND and Kathy (Gary) Miller of Bismarck, ND; a sister, Helen Franz of Upland, CA; a brother, Lloyd (Ellie) Ekeren of Roseville; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; son-in-law, Phil Skrove; seven brothers, Gilbert, Pete, Walter, Robert, Lester, Arne and Tony; three sisters, Carrie Dietz, Clara Ekeren and Mary Lemnus.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with Vigil Prayers at 7 p.m. at the Olson Funeral Home and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls.
