Miriam Audrey Gutz, 98, wife of the late Robert F. Gutz, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at Woodland Lodge in Fergus Falls, under the care of Lakeland Hospice.
Miriam was born on September 6, 1918, in Jenkins, MN, to Henry and Gladys (Miller) Glowe. She was an only child. She attended elementary school in Jenkins and graduated from Pequot Lakes High School, and then began college in Brainerd with the goal of becoming a secretary. Miriam changed courses and ended up graduating from beauty school in Duluth.
On May 23, 1942, Miriam married Robert F. Gutz in Secoma, WA. Robert was in the Air Force and was stationed there at the time. Their first son, Robert Jr., was born in Everett, WA, in 1943. Their second son, Richard, was born in Brainerd in 1947.
Miriam worked as a salon manager in Fergus Falls for many years. She was the first licensed salon manager in Minnesota. Miriam and her husband, Robert, retired to Panama City Beach, FL in 1983. She was very involved in the politics of Panama City Beach and attended all the city council meetings.
Miriam enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; a daughter-in-law, Becky Gutz; and a great-granddaughter, Angel Gutz.
She is survived by her sons, Robert (Rose) Gutz of Hastings and Rick Gutz of Fergus Falls; five grandchildren, Anne Gutz of Maplewood, Sarah (Anthony) Mulvihill of West St. Paul, David (Michelle) Gutz of Tacoma, WA, Kym (Kurt) Nygaard and John (Angie) Gutz, all of Fergus Falls; her great-grandchildren, Kassidy (Darrin) Mahn, Kelsey (Jake) Heck, Kole Nygaard, Shaylin Gutz, Kendal Nygaard and Noah Gutz; and numerous friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Lakeland Hospice, the M.S. Society, or the Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Center.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at Olson Funeral Home
Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 at the Olson Funeral Home Chapel
