Minnie Kolstad

April 1, 1905 — December 10, 2008

Minnie Kolstad, 103, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Underwood, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls.  She was born April 1, 1905, in Underwood, Minnesota, the daughter of August and Wilhemina  Heuer. Minnie was raised with a brother, Otto, and a sister, Hilda. She attended school into the eighth grade, when her mother was tragically killed in a runaway horse and wagon accident. As her father worked away from home on the railroad, Minnie needed to take over the care of the home at that time. On June 3, 1925, Minnie married Arthur Kolstad in Duluth, Minnesota. They settled into a comfortable life on their dairy farm outside of Underwood. After their retirement, they continued to reside on the farm while their son, Leslie, took over the dairy operation. Eventually they moved to Fergus Falls. Art passed away on August 12, 1996. When they were able to get away, Art and Minnie enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada. Minnie enjoyed playing whist, canasta, and bingo. In the summer months, you could find her tending a large vegetable and flower garden. Old time music and dancing were also favorite pastimes and were known to get her toes and feet moving during musical programs. Minnie was an active member of the Underwood Unitarian Church over the years. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Art; a son, Leslie, in 1984; a daughter-in-law, Joyce; her brother, Otto, and her sister Hilda. Survivors include her daughter, Arlene (Dennis) Severson, of Silver Bay, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Donald (Nancy) Kolstad of Underwood, Bette (Jeff) Johnson of Fergus Falls, Denise (Ken) Cornell of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, and David (Sandra) Severson of Westminster, Colorado; six great grandchildren: Deana Brandl, Jason Johnson, Michael Kolstad, Brandon Severson, Courtney Severson, and Danae Zugno; and three great-great grandchildren, Chase Brandl, Ava Brandl, and Drew Zugno.
