Mike Frich

Douglas Michael Frich, 60, a resident of Fergus Falls and a former employee of Fergus Falls State Hospital, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at his home under care of Lakeland Hospice. Mike was born in Minneapolis on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1947, the first of three sons born to Laurilla May and Douglas Milton Frich. He grew up in southeast Minneapolis and later moved with his family to Coon Rapids, where he graduated from Anoka Senior High School in 1964. He joined the United States Air Force in 1964 and was an Arabic linguist. He was stationed overseas in Greece and in Italy. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1968. Mike went to college and earned a Master's Degree in Management. Mike enjoyed a broad array of employment experiences while attending college. He began a career with the State of Minnesota and worked at Anoka State Hospital, Cambridge State Hospital and Fergus Falls State Hospital where he retired in 2006. In 1999 he married Kayleen (Mathews) Hintz, his third marriage. They enjoyed nine years together and loved dancing. Mike enjoyed tennis, racquetball and golf. He was an avid fisherman and had enjoyed camping, sailing and travel. He enjoyed reading books of all kinds. He was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church and looked forward to going to church every Sunday. Mike was a former member of the Fergus Falls Kiwanis Club and was twice past president of the Fergus Falls Day Breakers Lions Club. Mike also was twice past president of the Fergus Falls Area Family YMCA. He served on many boards of directors for many community organizations. Mike was a member of the American Legion, the Fellowship of Eagles and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. While stationed overseas, Mike taught himself Modern Greek. He also enjoyed learning Spanish and spending time in Mexico. Mike had a wry look upon life and enjoyed telling corny jokes. Preceding him in death were his mother, Laurilla May (Benton) and his father, Douglas Frich. Survivors include his wife, Kayleen, of Fergus Falls, and two brothers, Gregory (Becki) Frich of Albany, Georgia, and Gary (Brenda) Frich of Circle Pines, MN. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
