Michael Schmidt

Michael Dean Schmidt, 67, passed away peacefully at his home at Pioneer Pointe on February 12, 2025, under the care of his loving siblings and Hospice of the Red River Valley after a brief battle with cancer.

Mike was born December 7, 1957, in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Eugene and Maxine Schmidt. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He grew up in Fergus Falls, graduating from high school there in 1976. After high school he attended North Dakota State School of Science, graduating with an automotive mechanics degree.

He worked as a mechanic for several years. He then drove school bus for 38 years for Ottertail Coaches, and loved transporting his students on the Dalton route. He also volunteered his time driving the bus for the Kirkbride tours. He was a charter member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed restoring vintage vehicles, camping, collecting American Flyer toy trains, which he enjoyed sharing with kids at the Dalton Lake Region Pioneers Threshers Show every year. He had a talent for building and repairing anything.

Mike is survived by his parents, his three siblings, Margene (Mark) Newton of Rothsay, Brian (Jamie) Schmidt of Underwood, and DeAnn (Chuck) Sitter of Robins, IA, his five wonderful, loving grandchildren, Bentley, Nathan, Hudson, Scarlett, and Joanna, uncle and aunts, Paul and Diane Schmidt, and Marcella Wildung, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Olson Funeral and Cremation in Fergus Falls, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Interment: Knollwood Memorial Gardens, Fergus Falls, MN in the spring of 2025
