Michael Oien

July 22, 1955 — February 5, 2009

Michael Curtis Oien, 53, a resident of Rothsay, died Thursday, February 5, 2009 near Wahpeton, ND, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born July 22, 1955, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the son of Hartvick and Viola (Jacobson) Oien. He grew up in Friberg Township of Otter Tail County, attending school in Underwood. In 1967 the family moved to the Rothsay area, and he graduated from Rothsay High School in 1973. He worked construction for 18 years with Carlsrud Construction, and later Nord Construction. In 1995 he began working at Minn-Dak, currently in the utility repair department. In May of 1984 he married Cheryl Boese at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, and they made their home in Rothsay. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and most any type of outdoor activity. He was a member of the New Life Lutheran Church, Pheasants Forever, and was formerly a member of the Elizabeth Sportsmen’s Club. He worked hard at his job, and was always willing to help someone in need. He was an excellent handyman, and could fix almost anything. Mike especially loved spending time with his children and grandson. Preceding him in death were his father, and three brothers, David, Clyde and Scott Oien. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl, his daughter, Nikki Oien, his son, Taylor Oien, and his grandson, Nathan, all of Rothsay; his mother, Viola Oien of Detroit Lakes; two sisters: Gloria Foster and Gail Holton, both of Detroit Lakes; five brothers: Roger (Mary) Oien of Bemidji, Gary (Lynette) Oien of Pelican Rapids, Rick (Lisa) Oien of Naples, Florida, and Steward Oien and Rodney Oien, both of Detroit Lakes; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation:     5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
