Merrel E. Moore

July 5, 1931 — August 26, 2017

Merrell Edwin Moore, 86, a resident of Underwood, died Saturday, August 26, 2017, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.

Merrel was born on July 5, 1931, in LaMars Township in Fairmont, ND to Edwin and Lara (Kruskop) Moore. At the age of three, the family moved to a farm near Doran, MN. He attended country school there for two years. They then moved to a farm closer to Doran where he attended Doran Public School through the 8th grade. Merrel then went to Breckenridge High School and graduated from there in 1949.

He was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1952 during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in Germany for several months. Merrel was honorable discharged in February of 1954.

On November 4, 1955, he married Darlene Ann Herrmann at Augustana Lutheran Church in White Rock, SD. They lived near Campbell, MN where they farmed until 1960. They then moved to a farm near Underwood, MN, where he has resided since.

Besides actively farming, Merrel was employed by the Elevator in Dalton from 1963-1972. He then purchased Underwood Grain Co. in Underwood which he operated for 24 years. Upon closing the elevator, he went and worked for Northern Contours in Fergus Falls, until retiring in 2001.

Merrel was a charter member of the Underwood Lions Club, the American Legion Post 489 of Underwood, Fergus Falls VFW, and Tordenskjold Lutheran Church.

His greatest passion was farming. Hunting and fishing were things he enjoyed when he was able. Merrel enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially going to his son’s ball games and never missing one. He was an avid Vikings and Twins fan, and also enjoyed his girls—The Minnesota Lynx. He loved spending as much time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as possible. Traveling on feed trips with Darlene was a highlight of his working years.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Edwin and Lara Moore; sons, Dean (8/3/1988) and David (10/26/2003); sisters, Cynthia Oliver and Shirley Reigh; and brothers, Hugh, Verel, and Dale Moore.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Darlene; three sons, Bruce (Wendy) Moore of Byron, Tim (DeeDee) Moore of Underwood, and Jon (Vicki) Moore of Underwood; six grandchildren, Gregory (Angie) Hansen of Byron, Nicole and Alexander Moore of Byron, Brittany (Eli) Pachel of Moorhead, Patrick Moore of Battle Lake, and Brady Moore of Underwood; three great-grandchildren, Keegan Hansen of Byron, Jamison and Lyndee Pachel of Moorhead; brother, Don Moore of Pomona, CA; and his sister Faye Kringstand of Dawson, ND.
