Maxine Grace (McAlister) Washek, age 67, of rural Battle Lake, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena. Mickey Washek was born November 19, 1940, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of William “Bill” and Grace (Richie) McAlister. She lived in Nebraska and Iowa as a young girl before her family settled in Otter Tail County. On March 30, 1957, she married Kenneth Washek. They celebrated their 50 anniversary together in 2007. The couple made their home in Apple Valley, Minnesota for 39 years, and after retirement moved to the lake home on West Battle Lake. Maxine was employed for many years by the Penny’s Supermarket Stores as a cashier and bookkeeper. She loved visiting with family and friends. Her compassion towards others is cherished by everyone that knew her. She also enjoyed bowling, word puzzles, laughing, snowmobiling, Minnesota Twins baseball, and watching the birds and deer feed through her bedroom window. Preceding her in death were her parents, William “Bill” McAlister and Grace (Richie) McAlister, a grandson, Timothy Washek, and her sister, Shirley Jones. Survivors include her husband, Ken Washek of Henning, MN; a daughter, Cindy (Dale) Savageau of Prior Lake, MN; three sons: Wesley (Carol) Washek of Henning, Danny (Deanna) Washek of Burnsville, MN, and Brian Washek of Alexandria, MN; nine grandchildren: Kelly Wilfond, Shanna Allen, Darrick Allen, Chad Washek, Mike Savageau, Tara Washek, Kaycee Washek, Ethan Washek and Kody Washek; one great-granddaughter, Shelby Washek, and one great-granddaughter on the way; a brother, Gene (Norma) McAlister of Iowa; a sister, Darlene (Jim) Anderson of Minnesota, and many family and friends. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
