Mavis Johnsen

Mavis Marie Johnsen, 87, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was born March 12, 1923, in Fergus Falls, the daughter of William and Carrie (Jensen) Jensen. Carrie died at a young age and Mavis was raised by her stepmother, Alice Jensen. She grew up in the Underwood area where she attended country school and Underwood High School graduating in 1942. After high school she worked at various jobs. On February 24, 1946, she married Morris Johnsen at the Sverdrup Lutheran parsonage in Underwood. The couple made their home in the Underwood area.  Upon returning from a brief residence in Hoyt Lakes, Mavis began working as a secretary for the Underwood Schools. She retired as a bookkeeper after 27 years of employment with the school district. Mavis was a member of Sverdrup Church, and served as past president of the Underwood American Legion Auxiliary.  She enjoyed playing cards, especially Pinochle, puzzles, politics, reading, and monthly lunches with her high school classmates. Preceding her in death were her parents and stepmother, her husband, Morris, who died in 1997, brothers Erwin, Vernon, and Clarence, and a brother and sister, Rudolph and Evelyn, who died in childhood. Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Bernie) Gamber, and one son, Bricker (Jan) Johnsen, all of Underwood; six grandchildren: Lissa (Kevin) Johanson, Kristin Torgusson, Amy (Darren) Duenow, Breck (Aaron) Grove, Lindsey (David Johnson) Johnsen, and Kyle Johnsen; 12 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth (fiance' Tarver Mathison), Mitchell, and Samantha Johanson, Ashley, Matt, Ben, and Noah Torgusson, Nicole and Dustin Duenow, Kallyn and Max Grove, and Bricker Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Harriett Jensen of Shakopee.
