Mavis O. Hellerstedt, 93, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, February 28, 2015 at PioneerCare.
Mavis was born on October 1, 1921 in Wyndmere, ND, the daughter of Thorvald and Maria (Odegard) Berg. She was baptized and confirmed and attended school in Wyndmere. Mavis spent her younger years working for area families caring for children and helping with housekeeping chores, cooking and baking. She moved to Wheaton, MN to care for the Verner and Minnie Hellerstedt family, as Minnie was gravely ill. Upon Minnie’s death, Mavis continued to care for the household, including 3 sons. Verner would become Mavis’s future husband.
After Mavis and Verner married, they moved to Fergus Falls, Battle Lake and then back to Fergus Falls. She was a stay at home mom, raising 3 daughters and a son. She furthered her career by working in the activities department at the Pioneer Nursing Home. She worked for 27 years at Lake Region Hospital as a dietary aide. After retirement she served as a foster grandparent at the Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center.
She loved to dance, play bingo, put jigsaw puzzles together and was an avid Twins fan, when they were winning. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grand, great and great-great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Verner; step-sons, Emery (Alice) Hellerstedt, Merlyn Hellerstedt, Robert (Mary) Hellerstedt; sons-in-law, Doug Nelson, Allen Hammer; sister, Mabel Lewis and brothers, Gordon and Selvan Berg.
Survivors include her daughters, Marlene Nelson of Ashby, Linda (Stephen) Fose of Maumelle, AR, Janice Hammer of Fergus Falls; son, Gary (Bonita) Hellerstedt of Moorhead, MN; daughter-in-law, Dottie Hellerstedt of Honolulu, HI; 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and will resume one hour prior to service at the church.
