Mary Elizabeth Schoening, 91, a resident of rural Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born March 12, 1919, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, the daughter of Ernest and Minnie (Thymian) Hugli. She grew up in Wilkin County on her parent’s farm. She graduated in 1937 from Fergus Falls High School. Following graduation she worked at the Estrom Clinic in Fergus Falls. On October 9, 1949 she married Harold Schoening at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. They bought a dairy farm in Fergus Falls Township where they worked together for over 60 years through good times and bad. Mary was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, and the family was active in Fergus 4-H. She loved to garden and share her garden produce in her younger years. She was also a member of the neighborhood Homemaker Group. Mary especially enjoyed special lunches and fishing at Phelps Mill with her grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, Minnie and Ernest Hugli; her brother, Walter Hugli and his wife, Erma, and her brother, Frank Hugli; a sister, Frieda Mittelstadt and her husband, Verner; and a brother-in-law, Robert Schoening. Survivors include her husband, Harold Schoening of Fergus Falls; four children: Patricia (Dave) Tigner of Maple Grove, Wayne (Liz) Schoening of Fergus Falls, Jon Schoening of Fergus Falls, and Kay (Clayton) Reeves of Springfield, NE; four grandchildren: Maggie Schoening of Bismarck, ND, Amanda Schoening (fiancè Kyle Gulbrandson) of Bismarck, ND, Kasey Reeves of Springfield, NE, and Kelsey Reeves of Springfield, NE; two sisters-in-law, Mary Smith and Elaine Schoening, both of Fergus Falls; a brother-in-law, Norman (Donna) Schoening of Fergus Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.
