Martha “Marty” Jane Kohlmeyer, 66, of Wadena, died Sunday, January 15, 2017, at CentraCare in St. Cloud, MN.
Marty was born on July 5, 1950, in Fargo, ND, to Dr. Albert Charles and Marian Ruth (Dallman) Kohlmeyer. She attended school in Moorhead. After graduating from Moorhead High School in 1968, she majored in English at Luther College in Decorah, IA. She also studied English at Moorhead State University and Bemidji State University.
In the 1970’s Marty moved to Bemidji where she worked as a live-in counselor for the Northwest Juvenile Treatment Center. Later she worked with Planned Parenthood, and then as the school secretary for Lincoln Elementary.
In 1981, Marty began her career as a journalist at the Marshall Independent. She transferred to the Fergus Falls Daily Journal, then to the Bemidji Pioneer. Eventually she transferred to the Wadena Pioneer Journal. From 2000 to 2001 she taught English in Froid, MT. She was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, the Girl Scouts and was a Kiwanis member. She enjoyed sewing, needle point, weaving, drawing, and painting Ukrainian Eggs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Albert and Marian Kohlmeyer.
Marty is survived by her son, Ben Muchow (Lizzy King) of Little Falls; her grandchildren, Kylie Muchow and Kiera King, both of Little Falls; a brother, Charlie (Joan) Kohlmeyer of Pelican Rapids; a sister, Sarah Larson of Belle Plaine; and a cousin, George Quast of Hutchinson.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Service: 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the Olson Funeral Home Chapel
