Martha “Marty” Hitzeman, 90, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, January 12, 2017, at the PioneerCare Senior Cottages in Fergus Falls.
Martha was born on March 1, 1926, to Herman John and Caroline (Mueller) Sodman, at home on the farm, in Burns Township in Anoka County, MN. She graduated from Elk River High School in 1944 and then went on to Saint Barnabas School of Nursing and was part of the Cadet Nurses Corps.
On November 29, 1947, Martha was united in marriage to Philip Charles Hitzeman at Zion Church in Anoka. Over the years, the couple lived in Fridley, Spring Lake Park and Garrison. Martha was employed at Saint Barnabas Hospital and by the Spring Lake Park School District.
Martha was a Lioness (Lions Club), a member of the church choir and most recently, a member of First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. She enjoyed sewing, painting, sketching, reading and music, but spending time with her family was most important to her and brought her much joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip Hitzeman; a brother, Paul Sodman; and sister, Ida Schwab.
Martha is survived by her children, Bruce (Sue) Hitzeman of Lady Smith, WI, and Marie (Gordy) Fuchs of Fergus Falls; six grandchildren, Jason (Kristy) Fuchs, Bradley (Amanda) Fuchs, Lora (Andrew) Rogness, Ryan (Sarah) Hitzeman, Kelley (Eric) Fisher and Brenne (Amanda) Hitzeman; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister, Marcy Johnson of Anoka; a brother, Norman Sodman of Redwood City, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
