Marlene “Toots” Hockeborn, 79, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, January 11, 2013, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.
She was born May 24, 1933, in St. Cloud, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Clayton) Pull. She was baptized and confirmed at St Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud and attended school in St. Cloud. She was employed at “Eddy’s” Drive In while attending school. Marlene graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1951, where she was involved in music, and she continued to sing and dance in many different venues all her life. She lived and worked in Minneapolis for a short time
On September 20, 1952, she married Robert Fritz in St. Cloud. They resided in St. Cloud and Brainerd before moving to Fergus Falls in 1962, where they established the Photo Center, a downtown business.
Marlene was a volunteer at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School and later became a library aide at the Fergus Falls High School. She taught confirmation and was involved in numerous church groups. She was a Blue Bird leader, enjoyed entertaining, was an election official, gardener, enjoyed reading, writing poetry and musical ditties, and enjoyed singing, dancing, plays, whistling, was an artist, a quilter, a witty person and a word smith. She was also a world class bargain hunter. She called herself a “Culture Vulture”.
On June 23, 1990, she married the love of her life, Harl Hockeborn II on a boat in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. She was very active in Christ Church on Kent Island, while living in Maryland, and enjoyed working at Estate Treasures. They lived in Stevensville, Maryland until his death on July 17, 2011, at which time she returned to Fergus Falls to be near her family. She resided in Lydia House until moving to PioneerCare in December of 2012.
Preceding her in death were husband, Harl; two daughters, Janice and Charlotte; a son, Charles; two brothers, Roger Francis Pull and Thomas Garfield Pull (who died as a child); and twin grandsons, Adam and Ryan Miller.
Survivors include her seven daughters, Deborah (Mike) Karsnia of Erhard, MN, Catherine (Mark) Helland of Fergus Falls, MN, Joyce Fritz (Don Kraft) of Green Bay, WI, Elizabeth (Dennis) Miller of Collinsville, IL, Marti Carlson of New London, MN, Mary Frances (Gordon) Thomas of Mayville, WI and Patty (Brian) Jensen of Spicer, MN; four stepchildren, Wendy (Lee) Matchett of Jeanette, PA, Robin (Peter) Gilbert of Washington, DC, Kathy (Dimitri) Adcock of Oak Hill, VA and Harl (Margaret) Hockeborn III of Chesapeake, VA; grandchildren, Jon Pontius, Fritz (Sarah) Karsnia, Louis (Jessica) Karsnia, John Miller, Maggie (Jason Voigt) Fritz-Morkin, Patrick Fritz-Morkin, Charlotte (Richard) Pearson, Jackie (Jeremiah) Fitzcollins, Grant, Hannah, Natalie and Zachariah Thomas and Aaron, Emily and Adam Jensen; Step grandchildren, Jason (Heidi) Matchett, Lauren (Tom) King, Erica (Tom) Benoit and Emily Hockeborn; great-grandchildren, Luke, Brandon, Vivian, Marilyn, Rome, Zander, Landon, Dane and two soon to be born additions; step great-grandchildren Aaron, Lucy and Quinn and siblings, Gloria (Larry) Thome, Patt Parsons, Mary Ann Woods, Thomas Arthur (Arlene) Pull, and Bill (Mary) Pull all of St. Cloud, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends. We will all treasure the memory of this remarkable life.
Memorials are preferred to PioneerCare or the Salvation Army, both of Fergus Falls.
Visitation: 4:30-6:30 pm Friday with a prayer service at 6:30 pm at the funeral home
Memorial service: 11 am Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the PioneerCare Celebration Center, Fergus Falls
