Marjorie M. Houge, 93, a resident of rural Fergus Falls, died Monday, March 23, 2015, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls. She died peacefully surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 25, 1921 in Friberg Township, Fergus Falls, the daughter of George and Inga (Hanson) Newborg. She attended country school District 207 and Fergus Falls High School.
On June 4, 1938, she eloped with her sweetheart and the love of her life Sherlock Houge Sr. in Milbank, South Dakota. They were married for more than 65 years. The couple made their home in Detroit Lakes. In 1945, the couple purchased and later moved to Marjorie’s home farm in Friberg Township. In addition to farming together, Marjorie and Sherlock established Houge Electric.
Marjorie was a member of Stavanger Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, the Ladies Aide and the Red Hat Ladies. She enjoyed sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, purses, shoes and traveling. She was vibrant, energetic and loved life. Marjorie was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She loved to sing and dance, and especially loved the movie, “Gone with the Wind” and the song “Somewhere My Love.”
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Sherlock Sr.; grandson, Shannon Houge; brothers and sisters, Joseph Newborg, Haldes Knutson, Lawrence Newborg, George Newborg, Reuben Newborg, Agnes Hauck, Frances Sundberg, Marvel Olson and Virgil Newborg.
She is survived by her four sons, Donald (Joann) of Fergus Falls, David (Rebecca) of Erhard, Steven (Diane) of Fergus Falls, and Sherlock, Jr. (Coleen) of Underwood; grandchildren, Dawn (Gordon) Walker of Dassel, Scott (Mary) Houge of Fergus Falls, Mark (Kari) Houge of Bloomington, Heidi (Kraig) Kainz of Goodridge, Billy (Tessa) Houge of Fergus Falls, Sarah (Jeremy) Stigen of Hawley, Lucinda (James) VerSteeg of Richfield, Bethany (John) Krafthefer of Alexandria, Harmony (Tony) Larson of Ashby, Dereck (Megan) Houge of Underwood; great-grandchildren, Kelsey (Scott) Koontz, Stefan (Emily) Walker, Timothy Walker, Nicholas and Elizabeth Houge, Keifer, Kaitlin and Daylyn Kainz, Samantha Houge, Samuel and Elsa Stigen, William and Jack Krafthefer, Esteé and Evelyn VerSteeg, Melody, Levi and Aria Larson; great great-grandchildren, Karson and Payzlea Kainz, and Addilae Koontz; sister, Jeunette Nelson. Marjorie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2015, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Service: 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Stavanger Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls
Clergy: Pastor Ben Hosch and Reverend Brent Juliot
Interment: Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fergus Falls
