Mariean Bullock

Mariean Bullock, 89, a resident of rural Underwood died Tuesday, April 05, 2011, at her residence. Mariean Anna Lydia Zarn was born September 25, 1921 in Antrim Township of Watonwan County, Minnesota, 10 miles south of Medelia, the daughter of Herman and Emma (Schultz) Zarn. She was raised on the family farm, attending county school near there. She also attended school in Janesville, MN, where she was confirmed. On November 26, 1938 she married Selmer Quam in Esterville, Iowa. They lived for a time in Vining, Minnesota, before moving to Leadville, Colorado in 1942. In 1944 the family moved back to Minnesota to a farm near Vining. From 1949 to 1951 Mariean worked in the turkey plant in Henning. They then moved to Fergus Falls where she was employed at several local cafes. In 1954 the family moved to a farm near Kindred, ND, where Mariean had a job as a cook. They returned to Fergus Falls in 1955. She later worked for 8 years at the bakery, and also did child care in her home. Selmer passed away February 13, 1969. On March 5, 1971, Mariean married Leonard Bullock in Watertown, South Dakota. They enjoyed time spent at their cabin on Pickerel Lake, and spent many summers camping at Ten Mile Lake.  They also enjoyed going for long rides in the countryside, and playing cards and socializing with their friends.  Len passed away April 8, 2002. Mariean was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.  She volunteered delivering Meals by Wheels.  In her younger years Mariean enjoyed dancing, and also enjoyed doing word find puzzles, crocheting and handiwork, baking cookies for her grandchildren and baking donuts, and working in her flower beds and gardening.  Preceding her in death were her husbands, Selmer and Leonard; her parents; and her siblings: Bertha Schlie, Reinhard, Herbert, and Robert Zarn, and Lavera Schulz. Survivors include her children: Jerald (Phyllis) Quam of East Grand Forks, Darlene (Gary) Westerhaug of Fergus Falls, Donald (Arlene) Quam of West Fargo, Carol (Ron) Ehlers of Elbow Lake, Roger (Barb) Quam of Etowah, TN, and Laurie (Fred) Petersen of Underwood; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; her step-daughter, Nola (Bob) Halvorson of Stillwater; two sisters-in-law, Loretta (Jim) Gaustad of Henning and Gyda Quam of Fergus Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials are preferred to the Zion Lutheran Church building fund. Visitation: 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a 1:30 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church Service: 11 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls Clergy: Reverend Marv Abrahamson Interment: Leaf Mountain Cemetery, rural Clitherall, Minnesota Funeral Home: Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota
