Marie Emma Stensrude

October 25, 1943 — August 31, 2016

Marie Emma Stensrude, 72, of Underwood, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 31, 2016, with her children by her side, under the care of Hallett Cottages in Crosby.

Marie Emma Bakken was born on October 25, 1943, in rural Underwood, at the home of her parents, Clifford and Annie (Sundblad) Bakken. She grew up in rural Underwood in Maine Township, where she attended rural country school. She later attended Underwood Public School until 1962. Marie was active in 4H and sang in the High School Choir.

Marie married Herman Rocholl on March 31, 1962, at the Maine Presbyterian Church. They resided in Maine Township and operated a dairy farm and together had two children; a son Edwin, born July 1969 and a daughter Julie, born March 1975.

On July 24, 1982, Marie married Melvin Stensrude at the Maine Presbyterian Church. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm in Maine Township until 1996. Marie enjoyed dancing while Melvin played accordion with various bands. She spent years caring full time for her parents and husband, Melvin, while operating the dairy farm and raising her two children. Her hobby was gardening. She loved raising fruits and vegetables, which she canned and shared with family and friends. She loved cooking and feeding people. She found time to cook and bake for friends and neighbors who were sick or needed extra TLC. No one who came to visit ever left without tasting a homemade treat. Marie always enjoyed deer hunting season as a time for family and friends to gather around her dining room table. She loved preparing feasts for all the hunters to enjoy. Since leftovers were something she hated she always encouraged everyone to have a little more because, “I don’t like leftovers! I’m not putting them in the fridge.”

Even though her memory failed at the end, her children cherished the time they could spend with her doing their best to see to it she had the best care for her needs. This was a time for them to remember the wonderful mother Marie was.

She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin Stensrude, in 2002; and her parents, Clifford and Annie Bakken.

Marie is survived by her children, Edwin (Sherry) Rocholl of Crosby, and Julie Rocholl (special friend, Carl Riske) of Fargo, ND; her grandchildren, David Twa (special friend Callie Ronsberg) of Fargo, ND, Alexandra Rocholl-Werner of West LaFayette, IN, and Alisha Becker and Levi Becker of Crosby; her sister, Elaine Knutson of Pelican Rapids; and her brother, Gordon Bakken of Vergas. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends.
