Manley Haugen

Manley Arven Haugen, 82, of Clitherall, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 19, 1930, in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, the son of Martin J. and Alma C. (Aarness) Haugen. He was confirmed and baptized at Pelican Valley Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm in Prairie View Township of Wilkin County, Minnesota, where he attended country school. He attended Pelican Rapids High School, and then helped on his parent’s farm. He attended Diesel Technology School in Chicago, and made his career as an automotive and diesel technician. Manley served four years in the U.S. Air Force, from April of 1951 until his honorable discharge in April of 1955, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for service during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the 3700th Air Force Wing at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and also was stationed at McGuire AFB in Trenton, NJ, and the Warren AFB in Wyoming. On June 30, 1962, he married Valdine Anderson at Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. They were blessed with two children, Michelle and Tim. He worked as a diesel mechanic at a variety of companies over the years, most recently for Jacobson Transport in Wahpeton, North Dakota, retiring in 1995. Manley enjoyed traveling and camping trips with his family, and also hunting and fishing. Time spent with family was most enjoyable. In his early years he owned two planes and loved to fly. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother-in-law, Selvin Sorum, and two nephews, David Sorum and Jeffrey Follingstad. Survivors include his wife, Valdine, of Clitherall; his daughter, Michelle (Todd) Fick of Big Lake; his son, Tim (Tonya) Haugen of Fergus Falls; five grandchildren: Tara (Kent) Proctor, Krista Fick (friend Chaise Crooker), Carly Fick (friend Luke Hoaglund), Breanna Haugen, and Aaron Haugen; two great-grandchildren: Jamison Crooker and Drew Proctor; brothers: Glanis (Tilda) Haugan, Jerome (Martha) Haugen, and Duane (Helen) Haugen; sisters: Delores Sorum, Darlene (Dale) Bischoff, and Janet (Orlando) Follingstad; and many nieces and nephews. Manley was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by all.
