Mabel C. Hanson, 93, formerly of Pelican Rapids, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Mabel Catherine Hanson was born on November 14th, 1914 near Glyndon, Minnesota to Torjus and Kathryn (Anstadt) Langlie, the oldest of four children. On November 17, 1934 she married Sigvold Hanson in Moorhead. For several years she worked along with her husband as he built homes around the area. Together they bought a forty acre farm near Star Lake where they lived, raised vegetable gardens and milked. During the summer their produce was sold at area grocery stores as well as to tourists. Along with the vegetables she would offer baked goods freshly made for the lake area residents. Following Sigvold's death in October of 1972 Mabel scaled back her gardening and baking and went to work for the Good Samaritan Home in Pelican Rapids in the dietary department. During that part of her life she earned her GED and finished the program for Dietary Supervisors at the University of North Dakota when she was sixty-five years old. She continued working as manager of the kitchen and dietary supervisor until she was seventy. Throughout her years she has enjoyed quilting and embroidering, with always a few projects going on. She has completed numerous quilts for people all over the United States, including one piece donated to a museum in New York City.
