Lyle McCormick

Lyle Fredrick McCormick, 87, a resident of West Battle Lake, died Thursday, October 20, 2011, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He was born December 15, 1923, in Bath, South Dakota, the son of Fredrick P. and Genieve McCormick. He grew up there, graduating from Bath High School in 1941. After high school he began attending college at South Dakota State University. He then attended a semester at Indiana University from 1942 – 1943. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U. S. Army during World War II, where he served with the 381st Combat Engineers as a Water Supply Tech operating the water purifier. He received his honorable discharge at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, on April 1, 1946. He graduated on March 18, 1949, from South Dakota State University with a degree in Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. He later continued his schooling at the University of Wisconsin, graduating on August 24, 1962 from the Graduate School of Banking. Lyle began his employment in 1949 at the Aberdeen National Bank, in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He continued on serving as President of the Dodge Center State Bank in Dodge Center, Minnesota, in 1957, and in 1960 as President of Northwestern State Bank in Montevideo, Minnesota, retiring in 1984. During his career he was also elected president of District 7 of the Minnesota Bankers Association (MBA). On June 10, 1952, he married Irene D. Borden in Aberdeen. Lyle was an avid sportsman: hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and especially playing baseball. He played on the Pred Aberdeen Association Team, and was a member of the All-Tournament Team in the 1952 State Tournament as a 2nd baseman. He was also a member of the All-Tournament Team in the 1954 State Tournament of the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association, playing left field for the Pred Aberdeen Team. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and the Fergus Falls VFW. While in Montevideo he was a member of the Kiwanis and currently a member of the Montevideo Legion, as well as serving on the Montevideo Hospital Board and the Montevideo Chamber of Commerce. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother, Ken (Darlen) McCormick, his brother-in-law, Jim Walton, and a grandson, Matthew Lyle McCormick. Survivors include his wife, Irene McCormick; his sons: Michael (Dorothy) McCormick, and David (Cathy) McCormick; four grandchildren: Melissa McCormick, Kara (Jim) Melichar, and Sandra and Michelle McCormick; four great-grandchildren: Danika and Kellen Funkhouser, Theodore Melichar, and Evelynn McCormick; a sister, Helen Walton; a niece, Diane McCormick, and two nephews: Jim Walton, Jr., and Lonnie McCormick.
