Lyla Emily Nelson, 97, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was born February 9, 1913, in rural Underwood, Minnesota, the daughter of Hans O. and Lydia (Nilsby) Hagen. She attended school in Underwood and Minneapolis. On September 28, 1933, she married Norris A. Nelson in Sisseton, South Dakota. They lived in Fergus Falls from 1933 - 1940, then moving to a farm in rural Underwood where they lived until 1974. She worked at the Fergus Falls State Hospital in the dietary department, and then for several years at the Broen Memorial Nursing Home. They moved to Underwood until she was left alone. Most recently she had been living in assisted living at Silver Leaf and River View Heights until she passed away. Lyla was a long time member of Aurdal Lutheran Church and a member of it's Ladies Aid. She liked working word puzzles, crocheting, sunfishing, baking, and watching Wheel of Fortune; but most of all and most important to her was spending time with her family. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Norris. Survivors include her children: Joyce (George) Sawyer of Wheaton, MN, and Richard (Verna) Nelson, Norman (Mary) Nelson, David (Sally) Nelson, and Debra (Rick) Nelson, all of Minneapolis; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
