Luella Mabel Kantrud, 90, a resident of Fergus Falls, and wife of the late Ernie Kantrud, passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born May 22, 1920, on a farm in Taylor Township of Traverse County, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Winefeldt) Tohm. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Taylor Township, and confirmed December 11, 1938, by Rev. John Zimmerman. She attended school at District #30 in Taylor Township. When Luella was nineteen she and a friend, Hulda Zimmerman, came to Fergus Falls. On February 18, 1944, Luella married Ernest M. Kantrud at Fort Francis in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was employed for 33 years as a clerk at the Stemsrud and Emerson Drug Store in Fergus Falls, retiring in 1989. Luella and Ernie traveled by car extensively throughout the United States and British Columbia. She loved nature and climbing in the mountains. Her hobbies included reading, walking, playing softball in her early years, and cross stitching. She cross stitched many pictures for friends and relatives. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary, the Fergus Falls Senior Citizens, and AARP. She also enjoyed her volunteer work at Eisenhower School. Preceding her in death were her husband, Ernie, who passed away June 17, 1992; her parents; six brothers, Ferd Tohm, Ed Tohm, Martin Tohm, Melvin Tohm, Ralph Tohm, and Gustav Marquardt; and two sisters, Bertha Winefeldt, and Eva Farmer. Survivors include her children, Gary (Kathy) Kantrud of Fenton, Michigan, and Mary Lou Grewe of Fergus Falls; two grandchildren, Justin (Lori) Kantrud and Christian (Katie) Kantrud all of Fenton, Michigan; a sister, Esther Ahlsten of Breckenridge, MN; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Kantrud of Fergus Falls, Georgine Kantrud of St. Cloud, and Aletha Tohm of Wheaton, MN; five godchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Luella’s family would like give a special thank you to her friends and the staff at Sheridan House, Alcott Manor and the Broen Memorial Home.
