Loyal James Larsen, 78, a resident of Underwood, died Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
He was born on September 27, 1939, to Carl and Laura (Uhren) Larsen in Wadena. Loyal grew up on a farm north of Underwood. He was baptized in Nidaros Lutheran Church on October 15, 1939, and graduated from West Central School of Agriculture in Morris in 1957. Loyal served in the United States Navy from 1957-1960, working in the Submarine Services.
On May 16, 1959, he was united in marriage to Marlene Evelyn Leininger. They made their home on the family farm north of Underwood. Loyal continued farming until his death. He was also employed by Ottertail Power Company in Fergus Falls, working as a safety supervisor.
Loyal was very active in his local church where he taught Sunday school for many years, and served on several church councils. Loyal was a charter member of Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Underwood American Legion Post 489.
Loyal enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Carl and Laura Larsen; 3 brothers, John (Marian) Larsen, Joseph Larsen, and Loren Larsen.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Underwood; 3 children, Debera (Mitch) Krog of Henning, Vicki (Arthur) Ross of Kingsville, MO, James (Lori) Larsen of Waconia; 6 grandchildren, Dirk Krog, Emilie (Michael) Davis, Dane Ross, Dakota Ross, Joseph (Rebecca) Larsen, and Kaitlin Larsen; and 2 great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Madelyn Larsen as well as baby Levi on the way! Loyal is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home
Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at the Olson Funeral Home Chapel in Fergus Falls
