Lorraine (Fenske) Schulz passed away on May 16, 2019, at Pioneer Care in Fergus Falls one month shy of her 93rd birthday.
Lorraine Eunice was born June 17, 1926, on a small Aurdal Township farm to William and Selma (Haave) Fenske. Lorraine attended Country School District 66 through sixth grade, the same one-room school her parents, aunts, and uncles attended. She graduated from Fergus Falls Senior High School as a proud member of the National Honor Society. Lorraine grew up in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Friberg where she was baptized, confirmed, and married.
Lorraine and Walter W. Schulz were married on September 9, 1945. After their marriage, the couple purchased Walt’s parents’ farm in Fergus Falls Township, where they resided over 45 years. Lorraine worked side-by-side with Walt running a dairy farm, establishing a construction business, and raising two children, Karalyn and Tim. Lorraine also worked at Rosenblatt’s and Bunny Bread Bakery to help realize her dream of Karalyn and Tim getting a college education.
Lorraine was very artistic and creative as evidenced by her glass painting, ceramics, crafting, rosemaling, quilting, tailoring, and furniture restoration. She made sure Norwegian and German food specialties were a part of every Christmas season. She belonged to the Fergus Homemakers. Lorraine was a long-term Fergus 4-H Club leader and received the “Outstanding West Otter Tail County 4-H Leader” award. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren as they grew up. Lorraine treasured her many trips to Canada over the years to visit relatives, a special trip to Hawaii with Walt, and a tour to Norway. She and Walt loved old-time dancing and hosting whist card nights. Lorraine learned how to play bridge later in life and eventually became a regular bingo player at Pioneer Care.
Lorraine, an only child, was devoted to her mother, Selma, who was widowed at 57, never drove, and lived to 102. They were partners in countless ways – from gardening to canning, from entertaining to crafting, from sewing to shopping – to name a few. A few years after Walt’s passing in 1990, Lorraine moved to her mother’s home on North Union Avenue in Fergus Falls – after a significant remodeling was completed. They lived together until Selma went to a nursing home at 97.
Lorraine, a woman of faith, was an active member of Trinity Lutheran church including 18 years teaching Sunday School. In the 1970s, she and Walt were founding members of Hope Lutheran Church, where she was very active in Women of Hope and the quilting group.
Lorraine is survived by: daughter Karalyn (Gary) Harrington of Battle Lake, son Tim (Wendy) Schulz of Lafayette; grandchildren Mark (Kelly) Harrington of Inver Grove Heights; Chad (fiancé Sam) Harrington of Eagan; Sara (Garth) Saul of Prior Lake, and Laura (Kyle) Dalquist of Lafayette; great grandchildren Nathaniel Verduzco, Camden Harrington, Keegan Saul, Kinley Saul, William Dalquist, and Lane Dalquist.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, who died on August 8, 1990, one month shy of their 45th wedding anniversary; her infant son, Richard; her parents; her in-laws, William and Emelia (Schroeder) Schulz; three brothers-in-law, George Schulz, Ray Beske, Willard Beske; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Schulz, Marion Beske, and Alice Beske; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and cousins.
