Loretta Stiyer

Loretta Anna Ella Stiyer, 98, a resident of Fergus Falls, was called home Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

She was born October 25, 1914 at home in Friberg Township of Otter Tail County, Minnesota, the daughter of Emil and Rose (Schleske) Mavis. She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, which then was held in School District 159, where she also went to grade school. Loretta then went to parochial school at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, where she was confirmed by Rev. Walter Friedrich.

On July 14, 1943 she married Othal Stiyer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, where they were members, until Faith Lutheran Church was organized and were then charter members. The couple farmed in Fergus Falls Township until 1966 when they moved to Mesa, Arizona. They also lived in Oregon for one year in 1947. In their life together they enjoyed travelling to Florida, Texas, California, Washington, and Montana.

When Othal retired in 1974, they spent summers in Minnesota and wintered in Arizona until 1986 when they moved back to Minnesota. Then they joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in East Friberg. Loretta also joined the St. Paul Ladies Aid at that time. In 1993 Loretta moved to the River Bend apartments in Fergus Falls, where she was both blessed and a blessing to many friends. Our sister in Christ, Loretta moved to the Broen Home on August 19, 2013.

Loretta enjoyed sewing, embroidering, cooking and flowers. She also belonged to the Homemakers Club and the Anniversary Club.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; sisters and their husbands, Doris and George Foster and Evelyn and Melvin Marweg; and brothers, Wesley, Willis, and Michael Mavis.

Survivors include her brothers, Lloyd (Olga) Mavis of Minneapolis, and Duane (Mary Jane) Mavis of Erhard; sisters-in-law, Carol Mavis of Seattle WA and Isabelle Mavis of Helena MT; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2013 at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and resumes one hour prior to service at the church.
Service: 1 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Fergus Falls
