Leona Hanson, 91, of Underwood, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.
Leona was born on November 23, 1921 in rural Underwood, the daughter of Hardy and Lillian (Johnson) Johansen. She grew up in Underwood attending country school and graduated from Underwood High School in 1939.
On March 22, 1947 she married Marvin “Monnie” Hanson and they lived in Underwood. Through the years, she worked at several restaurants and at the Farmer Grocery Store in Underwood.
She was a member of Sverdrup Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was active in circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Leona enjoyed gardening, flowers, birds, walking, knitting, sewing, reading and following the Minnesota Twins.
Leona lived at Shady Oaks for 6 years under the care of Coleen and Sherlock Houge and she enjoyed the Houge’s grandchildren, Melody and Levi. They were a delight to her while she lived there.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Monnie, who died in 2003; three brothers, Neal, Raymond, Mervin and a sister, Elaine Montz.
Survivors include a son, Allen (Bernice “B.J.”) Hanson of Fergus Falls; two granddaughters, Tracy (Dave) Linton, Robyn Hanson; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Ryan Linton; two brothers, James (Pat) Johansen, Richard Johansen; sister, Marcella (Phil) Sundberg. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and family friend Donna Hanson.
Memorials are preferred to Lakeland Hospice or the Salvation Army.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday with a public prayer service at 5:30 at the funeral home
Memorial Service: 2 p.m. Friday at Sverdrup Lutheran Church, Underwood, MN
