Lawrence C. “Larry” Fyhrie, age 70, of rural Underwood, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at the Fargo VA.
Lawrence (Larry) Fyhrie was born on August 30, 1942 to Conrad and Christine (Poltiske) Fyhrie. He grew up on a farm in rural Fergus Falls and graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1960. After high school he joined the Air Force from 1961 – 1967. He then worked for Mid-America Dairy for 35 years until his early retirement in 2000. These last few years were spent helping various farmers, which he loved.
On August 20, 1966 he married Carolyn (Carol) Rian at St. James Catholic Church. They purchased a farm in Maine Township where they still reside today. Larry and Carol were blessed with three children, Todd, Troy and Teanna. In September of 2000 Larry was severely burned in a propane explosion in his home. He was a true fighter and survived something unimaginable. He was given a second chance and always told his family that no day was ever too long. We feel blessed to have had these 12 bonus years with him!
Larry was very active in the Knights of Columbus where he rang bells for the Salvation Army and sold Christmas Trees for the Boy Scouts. Larry loved to play the concertina and played for many special events and at numerous nursing homes throughout the area entertaining everyone he met. He always said he was given a second chance so he could give back to others. It gave him so much pleasure to see how their faces would light up when he played his music. To this day Larry could not read a single musical note, he played strictly by “ear”. Larry loved to play cards, dominoes, go fishing and deer and turkey hunting. His family and friends meant the world to him and you could find him at almost all of his grandkids activities with a smile on his face. Larry was also a member of St. James Catholic Church, the Underwood American Legion and The Eagles.
Larry is survived by his wife Carol of 46 years; his three children: Todd (Michelle) Fyhrie of Fergus Falls, Troy (Jodi) Fyhrie of Underwood and Teanna (Joe) Molter of Rothsay; nine grandchildren: Cody, Brady and Sydnie Molter, Shaylee Fyhrie and Dakota Johnson, Isaac and Matthew Fyhrie, and Tyler and Nathan Stanley; four brothers, Len (Jill), LeRoy (Angie), Allen (Elaine) and Alden and one sister, Leona (Tom) Arneson; one brother-in-law, Kenny Rian and two sisters-in-law, Cecelia (Tom) Johnson and Blanche (Loren) Fretland; one uncle, Bud Larson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his three Godchildren, James Fyhrie, Tate Goeden, and Sydnie Molter.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elaine, his father and mother in law, Marcellus and Anna and a brother in law, Duane. Blessed be the memory of Larry Fyhrie.
