Lawrence “Lorney” or “Larry” Pavek, 86, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Wahpeton and Otter Tail Lake, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Woodland Lodge, Fergus Falls
Lorney was born on January 8, 1928, in St. Paul, to Frank and Anna (Kotchian) Pavek. He grew up in the Lidgerwood, ND, area attending country schools and graduating from Lidgerwood High School. He joined the Navy upon graduation and attended the University of North Dakota after his honorable naval discharge.
On September 19, 1953, Lorney and Karol Krohn were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton.
Lorney began his career in banking in 1949 as a bookkeeper for the National Bank. He continued to work at the bank through several name changes and retired as a vice president of First Bank of Wahpeton in 1984.
Lorney served and belonged to many community organizations during his working years. He was a longtime treasurer of the City of Wahpeton and Wahpeton Park Board. He also served as president of the Wahpeton Rotary Club and the HUD program for Wahpeton. He was a past member of the Elks, Eagles, American Legion and Salvation Army. He was presently a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.
After Lorney and Karol’s retirement they moved to their lake home on Otter Tail Lake. Lorney enjoyed the summers planting trees, mowing, playing horseshoes, and grilling. Some of his other hobbies included deer hunting, bowling, deep sea fishing, sailing, water sports, and watching football (especially the Vikings). Lorney and Karol spent several winters in Arizona, Florida and Texas, enjoying the warmer climate.
In 1999, Lorney and Karol moved to Fergus Falls and became involved in church and Senior Citizens.
Preceding Lorney in death were his parents and his two brothers, and sister-in-law, Vernon Pavek and Harvey and Ardis Pavek.
He is survived by Karol, his wife of 60 years; a brother-in-law, Larry (Susan) Krohn and two sisters-in-law, Marcie (Lloyd) Olson and Laurel Pavek. He also leaves nephews, Gary (Susie) Pavek, Tom (Belinda) Pavek, Tom (Janet) Olson, Weston Krohn; nieces, Diane (George) Clark and Susan (Ron) Boe and many friends.
Memorials preferred to Bethlehem Building Fund or the Humane Society of Fergus Falls.
