LaVern Berg

LaVern Morris “Bergie” Berg, 85, of Dalton, died Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the ELEAH Medical Center in Elbow Lake. He was born April l5, 1923, in Dane Prairie Township of Otter Tail County, the son of Edward and Emma (Haug) Berg of Dalton. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was later confirmed at the Sarpsborg Lutheran Church of Dalton. LaVern attended grades 1-6 at District #19, where his father, son and daughter also attended school. He graduated from the eighth grade at Fergus Falls High School. On June 1, 1958, LaVern and Jeanette Berg were united in marriage at the Sverdrup Lutheran parsonage of Underwood.  During LaVern’s younger years he farmed with his dad on the family farm and spent weekends and other free time driving his motorcycles and ski jumping. Later on, LaVern started working construction with Delzer’s and continued farming the family farm. After retirement he still enjoyed watching ski jumping competitions. LaVern’s hobbies included farming, riding motorcycles, watching TV, driving his truck, having lunch and coffee at the Dalton Café and City Restaurant of Ashby, and visiting his children and their families, and his neighbors. Preceding him in death were his wife, Jeanette, his parents, and a sister, Lorraine Vikesland. Survivors include his son, Jeffrey (Carol) Berg of Dalton; two daughters: Brenda (Terry) Johnson and Jean (Mike) Tinjum, all of Dalton; his grandchildren: Meko (Casey), Sonia, Jessica (Matt), Clinton, Nicole, Vance, Emily, Brooke, and Brenna; three great-grandchildren: Nathaniel, Logan and Tony; one sister, V. Joyce Berg of Minneapolis; and nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
